Definition
On the command line you type a line of text, such as a command, and the computer answers in text. On macOS the program for this is called Terminal; on Windows it is Terminal or Command Prompt (A prompt is the input to a language model: the question, instruction or template the AI responds to.).
Many AI tools that work with files run on the command line, Claude Code among them.
What it means for you
You do not need to master the command line. Your staff start a workflow (A workflow specifies what information goes in, what happens to it and who checks the result.) with a short command and check the result wherever suits them: in the AI harness, on the command line, in a dashboard (A dashboard is an overview page, usually in the browser, that shows the state of tasks, results or figures at a glance.) or in a desktop or web app. We show them how at handover.
